Group discounts

Group Discounts
I’m lucky enough to be near a big city without being in a big city. Which means, I get to take advantage of all the wonderful things the city has to offer! And with lots of things to offer, comes lots of good deals! Have you heard of Groupon? It’s basically an online group discount. All you have to do is sign up & subscribe to their daily emails (it’s not annoying, I promise – it’s an awesome deal each day that you either like & purchase or you don’t & you delete it).
Another favorite one in Atlanta (and they’re in lots of other cities as well) is Living Social - same concept just different deal each day!
There’s also another one called Tipper – this one’s still fairly new so honestly the deals aren’t that great, but I’m still signed up just in case.
I’ve seen 50% off membership at the Center for Puppetry Arts, 60%+ off great restaurants, Spa Treatments & even house & lawn services! And don’t just think about the city that you live in. If you’re going to San Diego, DC or another large city on vacation soon, you can sign up or just be sure to check their deals leading up to your stay. It could be a perfect way to save money on a trip!
Do you have other ones in your hometown? If so, leave a name or link in the comments & I’ll have to see if they’re in Atlanta too.
And Bloggers – All of the ones listed above have Affiliate programs! If you use them or love them, make sure you’re signed up as an Affiliate! You can get widgets or just use text links!
*Disclosure – Yes, the links above are Affiliate links. If everyone I know actually signed up through those links, I might be able to pull off a free ice cream cone! But the links, don’t change the fact that I really enjoy theses sites & look forward to my daily deals!

Planet shark exhibit
Feb 22nd
The Georgia Aquarium is the World’s Largest Aquarium, so it’s only fitting that it’s hosting the world debut of the Exhibition “Planet Shark: Predator or Prey”. Earlier last week, I was so happy to be on Twitter at the right time (oh Twitter, how I love thee) because I saw a tweet for an invitation to visit the Aquarium as part of “Planet Shark Blogger Day”.
So this past Saturday we visited the Georgia Aquarium. It was listed on my Top Ten Places to go in Atlanta with Kids. We went once with Evan when he was about 6 months old. So while he might have enjoyed it at the time, he didn’t know one fish from the next & would have been just as fine watching a fish tank at PetSmart! But this time it was different! I told Evan during breakfast on Saturday that we were going to the Aquarium to see some sharks! He immediately stopped eating breakfast & announced that he needed to go get dressed! The boy was ready!!
Evan loves watching the Discovery Channel with his Dad and he’s seen different shark specials before. Last year, while in Florida a baby shark got caught in the tide and was stuck in the waves close to the shore. Evan got to see it close up before someone carried it out far enough to swim back into the ocean. So, honestly even though he’s four, I wasn’t concerned about him being afraid of what we might see. Either way, I pulled up the Georgia Aquarium’s website and we looked at pictures and a brief video online just to make sure he would be OK with everything. He was … he was just waiting on us to hurry up & leave!!
The Aquarium is beautiful! It really is. I don’t say that about many places that are kid-friendly, but really. It’s beautiful. I think they did just an awesome job with the design & of course when the most amazing fish & underwater creatures are part of the view, how can it be bad??
It costs an additional $5.50 for adults and $4 for children to visit the Planet Shark Exhibit (and I’ll make that better at the end), but if you have any interest in sharks or if you just want your visit at the Aquarium to last longer then it’s totally worth it!
You get to walk through 12,000 square feet of exhibit space reading tons of facts & seeing some super cool things - there’s shark teeth. Lots & lots & lots of Shark Teeth! My husband loved collecting shark teeth as a child (it’s actually one of the collections that he still won’t let go of today) and he was in heaven! There were tons of Jaws, no not the movies (actually there were parts of those playing too), but real-from-the-mouth-jaws! There are full-scale replicas. There’s even some frozen in time sharks. Those kinda gave me the chills! There were different wet suits that had been made over the years – like the one that looked like bubble wrap. Just hearing that, I would have told you that might have been a bad idea … but someone went as far as actually making it! Yep it looked like bubble wrap! Supposedly it was made with poison so to kill the shark when it bit into the suit. The problem? The shark might die, but the person wearing the suit would get bitten pretty good too! There was a real-life shark cage that you could actually step inside. Megan (our 18mo) enjoyed the cage a little too much! There were educational movies playing, tons of facts to read & overall just a lot to take in!
They say the shark is misunderstood … and this exhibit does a great job at laying out real facts. Sure we shouldn’t be stupid when getting in the ocean. There’s definitely things that swimmers can do to entice an attack, but the sharks aren’t after us by any means!!
Get more information about Planet Shark or the Georgia Aquarium.
*Disclosure – I received 2 Complimentary Tickets to the Georgia Aquarium & the Planet Shark Exhibit for me & a guest. I have been asked to help spread the word about the Exhibit, but as always, all information in this post is my honest & truthful opinion.
Top ten places to go in atlanta with kids
Feb 15th
This past weekend we went to the circus. Even though I’ve grown up here & lived in the Atlanta area my entire life, I really don’t go downtown all that often. But driving through the streets I was reminded of all the great places right at my fingertips to take the kids.
1. Imagine It! Children’s Museum of Atlanta - A hands on museum. As in, you don’t have to be afraid of the kids touching anything … they’re supposed to touch it all. There’s levers, grocery stations, bulldozers, painting, fishing, train tracks, live entertainment, moon sand & more! It’s thought out so well! Plus it gets Extra Points in my book – You can enjoy their menu for lunch (they have a modified Chick-Fil-A menu) or you can bring your own lunch. A great way to save money!!
2. World of Coca-Cola – Coke is King in Atlanta! And the World of Coke is awesome! It’s recently been remodeled so it’s fresh & new. You basically walk through the history of coke – memorabilia, watch old commercials, and see assembly plants. By far the favorite of every kid (and adult probably too) is the drinking area. You can taste coke from all over the world! The big joke is that “Beverly” is the best. *Wink*Wink* – it’s actually horrible!!! But you can wash it down with your favorite and get rid of that nasty taste:) There’s also a great store where you can purchase anything ‘coke’ related that you’ve ever dreamed, or never even thought of!
3. Georgia Aquarium – Atlanta is home to the world’s largest aquarium! I think that’s pretty cool. It hasn’t been in Atlanta too terribly long, so I’ve only been once but I know it’s a place that a variety of ages can enjoy!
4. Zoo Atlanta – We love the zoo! The kids of course enjoy all the animals, but then they also have a petting area, train ride, and carousel ride. And again, you’re welcome to bring a cooler full of food – always appealing to me! Plus there’s free parking!
5. Tellus Museum – Now Tellus isn’t in the city, but wonderful just the same. In fact it’s actually even a little more wonderful because you don’t have to fight the city streets & parking is free. Now there are definitely some exhibits that are too old for my pre-school kids. And a couple of rooms they had no interest in & I wanted to run them out quickly before breaking anything. BUT – there was plenty to keep them engaged – panning for gold, digging for dinosaur bones, looking at at dinosaur replica’s. It was alot of fun!
6. The Fox – Built in the 1920’s, this place is beautiful!! Now granted, the Fox in general isn’t really a kid’s place, but you must check their schedule because there’s always wonderful things going on. Coming up soon is a live performance of Mary Poppins & Curious George!!
7. Sporting Events – Hawks, Thrashers, Braves, Falcons - I think it’s awesome that our city has four major sporting teams – there’s bound to be a sporting event anytime you visit! Evan’s only been to a Braves game so far, and he loved it! Of course he was a little disappointed when he learned he didn’t get to actually play with the team!!
8. Center for Puppetry Arts - Puppets! What more do you need to know. There’s always something great going on when puppets are involved!
9. Stone Mountain Park – A little bit of everything! You can climb the mountain, ride a train, or watch a laser show. In the winter they even turn Stone Mountain into Snow Mountain!!
10. Six Flags over Georgia – It’s one of the 6 flags!! It’ll be a while before we go there with Megan & Evan, but it’s a great place for a little older. Granted they have plenty of young kid activities too, but I personally just can’t muster up the thought of carrying them around the park just yet!
So, if you’re in Atlanta or visiting soon … lots of great things & places to enjoy! And with all the venues there’s sure to be something ‘extra’ in town too, so Ticketmaster is always a great resource!!
